Here are some top tips from top driving instructor Dan Fantoni for smooth driving, whether you’re a learner or an experienced driver.

  1. Maintain a Light Touch on the Controls
  • Avoid gripping the steering wheel too tightly and relax your hands for smoother steering.
  • Use progressive acceleration and braking rather than sudden movements.
  1. Look Well Ahead
  • Anticipate road conditions, traffic flow, and potential hazards early.
  • Keep your vision high and avoid staring at the car directly before you.
  1. Smooth Acceleration
  • Gradually apply pressure to the accelerator rather than stamping on it.
  • Maintain a steady speed rather than frequently speeding up and slowing down.
  1. Gentle Braking
  • Brake progressively: start lightly, increase pressure smoothly, and ease off just before stopping.
  • Anticipate stops early to reduce harsh braking.
  1. Use the Correct Gears
  • Shift gears smoothly at the correct RPM to prevent jerky movements.
  • In modern cars, avoid unnecessary downshifting, letting the engine braking do some work.
  1. Master Clutch Control (for manual drivers)
  • Avoid riding the clutch, press it fully down when changing gears and release it smoothly.
  • Practice balancing the clutch for controlled smooth movement in slow traffic.
  1. Keep a Safe Following Distance
  • The “two-second rule” applies in dry conditions and doubles that in wet or icy conditions.
  • More space means less need for sudden braking.
  1. Smooth Steering
  • Use the “push-pull” technique for gradual and controlled turns.
  • Avoid overcorrecting the wheel, make small adjustments and keep the car steady.
  1. Plan Your Lane Changes Early
  • Signal well in advance and check mirrors and blind spots before moving.
  • Avoid last-minute swerves or abrupt lane changes.
  1. Be Mindful of Road Conditions
  • Wet or icy roads require extra caution, reduce speed and avoid sharp inputs.
  • Watch for potholes and rough surfaces that could unsettle the car.
