Becoming a Driving Instructor is a very popular choice of career and we have had the pleasure of teaching people to find their perfect job.

Choosing the right Driver Training provider is the best place to start. Unlike the bigger companies, we like to take a bit of time to understand your needs and make sure we are the best fit. We do this because we want you to succeed and as we are going to be spending time together, it’s important that we get it right from the start.

We know this is a big decision and there is a lot to take in, so here is some basic information to help you make the right choice.

Becoming a confident driving instructor involves a structured process to ensure you are qualified to teach others to drive safely.

Here are the steps you need to follow from the GOV.UK website:

Check Your Eligibility:

    • Age: You must be at least 21 years old.
    • Driving Experience: Hold a full UK or EU driving licence for at least three years, with no more than six penalty points.
    • Criminal Record: Pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Apply to the DVSA:

    • Submit an application to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
    • Obtain a new DBS check as part of your application, even if you already have one.

Prepare for and Pass the Qualifying Tests:

    • ADI Part 1: Theory Test:
      • A multiple-choice test covering road procedures, traffic signs, driving laws, and instructional techniques.
      • Includes a hazard perception test.
    • ADI Part 2: Driving Ability Test:
      • A practical driving test assessing your driving skills to a high standard.
    • ADI Part 3: Instructional Ability Test:
      • A practical test evaluating your ability to instruct learners effectively.
    • You must pass all three tests in order and within two years of passing the ADI Part 1 test.

Consider Training:

    • While not mandatory, enrolling in a training course can help you prepare for the qualifying tests.
    • Training providers can be found on the DVSA’s Official Register of Driving Instructor Training (ORDIT).

Gain Practical Teaching Experience:

    • After passing the ADI Part 2 test, you can apply for a trainee licence.
    • This licence allows you to gain up to six months of practical teaching experience before taking the ADI Part 3 test.

Register as an Approved Driving Instructor:

    • Once you’ve passed all three tests, apply to join the ADI register.
    • Registration is valid for four years, after which you’ll need to renew and undergo a new DBS check.
