Why am I an Independent Driving Instructor?
Dan Fantoni, the owner of Fantoni Driving School, talks about why he prefers being an independent Driving Instructor. He is not only a driving instructor but is also qualified to teach those looking to become driving instructors. So, if you are looking for a new career Dan has a unique perspective on why this is the right job for him.
Being an independent driving instructor can offer the obvious benefits as I have outlined below but there is more to it than that.
- Flexibility: As an independent driving instructor, you have the freedom to set your own schedule. This flexibility allows you to work around other commitments or personal preferences.
- Control Over Workload: You can control the number of students you take on at any given time, allowing you to manage your workload according to your preferences and availability.
- Increased Earnings Potential: Independent driving instructors often have the potential to earn more compared to those working for the bigger driving schools, as they can set their own rates and retain the majority of the lesson fees.
- Personalised Teaching Approach: Working independently allows you to tailor your teaching methods and lesson plans to suit the individual needs and learning styles of your students, providing a more personalised learning experience.
- Building Your Own Brand: As an independent instructor, you have the opportunity to build your own brand and reputation within your community. Positive word-of-mouth referrals and reviews can help attract more students to your business.
- Autonomy: You have full control over how you run your business, including decisions regarding teaching techniques, lesson durations, and additional services offered.
- Job Satisfaction: Many independent driving instructors find satisfaction in helping students achieve their goal of obtaining a driver’s licence and gaining confidence on the road. This sense of accomplishment can be rewarding on a personal level.
- Continuous learning and improvement: Being independent means you have the flexibility to adapt and evolve your teaching methods based on feedback and ongoing professional development, leading to continuous improvement in your skills as an instructor.
Overall, becoming an independent driving instructor can offer a range of benefits including flexibility, increased earnings potential, autonomy, and the opportunity for personal and professional growth.
But the most important part of my working day is knowing that my students have passed their driving test because of the hard work we have put in together. All of this comes from my ability to personalise the lessons and concentrate on the areas that mean the difference between passing or failing.
Are there any downsides to being an independent driving instructor compared to working for one of the big driving schools? In my opinion, there is a little bit more work to do when it comes to running your business compared to say a Franchise operator. However, on reflection, I would rather be an independent business. Would I do it any other way? No.
